Whether you have been speaking to someone for a week, a month or even a year, meeting someone for the first time can be nerve-wrecking. Especially when that first time is for a first date!

You may not know what to do or say when you first get there or even how to break the ice.

These next 3 tips will make sure you have the smoothest first meeting and set a good tone for the rest of the date.

1. Be early, early!

Once you have decided on a time and location of where you will both be meeting, you should always plan to get to the date early; if you are the one that arranged the date that is.

You do not want your date to feel awkward or embarrassed or wondering whether you are going to stand them up – this may leave a bitter taste in their mouth for the rest of the date!

If you turn up early you can be there to greet the other person and take the lead – and hopefully some of your nerves may have calmed before they even get there.

If you arrange your date for 7pm and you want to be 10 minutes early, you may think it will be fine to get there for 6:50pm, but this doesn’t give you any room for anything unexpected to happen like there being extra traffic on the road.

Give yourself double the amount of time to get to your date – if the journey takes 10 minutes, give yourself 20 minutes for the journey, this gives you extra time to make sure you are definitely early!

2. Bring a gift

Bringing a gift can break the ice with your date and also make them feel special!

The gift doesn’t have to be expensive, and it doesn't have to be cliché – try making your gift personal to your date.

If you and your date have been speaking for a little while and you know a little bit about them, you could get them a gift that you know they will appreciate. If your date has told you how much they love Maltesers, you could buy them a box from the shop beforehand.

You may have an inside joke with your date, and you could use this inside joke to buy them a gift. If they have told you how much they like the band ‘red hot chilli peppers’, you could buy them some actual red hot chillies and make a joke about it.

This will definitely break the ice and it may make them feel a lot more comfortable, especially if there is humour involved.

3. Give a genuine compliment

This may sound obvious – but with all the nerves and emotions running high, you may forget to compliment your date and they may have made a huge effort to get ready!

You want them to feel good on the date and by giving them a compliment this may make them feel appreciated.

The best way to give a compliment – is to give your date a compliment on something they made a conscious decision about.

This could be what they are wearing, how they styled their hair or even the shoes they have on!

These types of compliments are always better and more sincere – as your date may have spent time thinking about how they should style their hair or what they should wear.

A compliment on something they have made a conscious decision about will not only make them feel great, but it will also put them at ease and reassure them that they made the right decision.
